Life

Millard Mitchell was born in Havana to American parents. There are different statements about the year of birth of Mitchell, ranging from 1900 to 1905; even if most sources now name 1903 as the year of birth. He wanted to be an actor at an early age and made his Broadway debut in New York in 1923 . Mitchell has appeared in over 30 different productions on Broadway in the course of his career, but it was mainly the plays Broadway - played continuously from September 1926 to September 1928 - and Three Men on a Horse , which ran from January 1935 to January 1937 which was supposed to represent Mitchell's most successful stage work. Mitchell was a regular on Broadway stage until 1948.

Mitchell began his film career in the early 1930s, but initially received only minor parts. It was only when he came to Hollywood as a now well-known theater actor in the early 1940s that Mitchell was given increasingly better supporting roles. Mitchell was often seen as an authority figure, for example at the side of Gregory Peck in the films The Commander (1949) and The Sniper (1950). In Billy Wilder's comedy A Foreign Affair , he played a US colonel stationed in Berlin. In total, his film career spanned around 35 works, best known probably the Gene Kelly classic Singin 'in the Rain (1952) with Mitchell in the role of Hollywood producer Simpson. Also in 1952 stood alongside Charles Bronson in My Six Convicts in front of the camera, for which he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1953 .

Mitchell was married to the stage actress Peggy Gould until his death and was the father of two daughters. The actor, who had been a heavy smoker for many years, died of lung cancer in October 1953 at the age of 50 . He was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City , California .
