In the mountains of Colorado , he met an old gold mining Jesse Tate and dishonorably dismissed Unions - Officer Roy Anderson, who join him.

Together they manage to capture Ben Vandergroat and his companion Lina. On the long way back, the cunning Ben manages to play the three bounty hunters against each other and sow discord. When Howard is injured in an Indian attack and has to be looked after by Lina, Lina falls in love with him. Although she helps Ben to escape, when he kills old Jesse in cold blood, she turns away from him for good.
