action

Anthony John is a Broadway theater star . He is extroverted and has a rampant temper. His off-stage emotional outbursts are notorious. He confuses art with life. So he is an extremely amiable man as long as he occupies this subject on stage. However, if he plays a villain, living with him becomes unbearable. His wife Brita must also find out about this. Like him, she is a successful theater actress and separates from her husband. But the theater brings them together again. They are supposed to play Othello on Broadway together . The production is a huge success. However, the role of Othello overwhelmed Anthony for his private life. The killer out of jealousy on stage becomes the killer in life. In a frenzy, he murders his temporary lover, Pat, whom he believes he recognizes as Desdemona , but cannot remember anything later. The murder case gives the theater's press agent, Bill Friend, the opportunity to get the drum started again for the already successful production. The grieving Anthony is angry about it and attacks Bill Friend. However, Anthony must also realize that he has led a double life his entire life , and worse, that he himself is Pat Kroll's killer.

Reviews

"Brilliantly photographed, gripping detective melodrama with psychological refinement, which gains persuasiveness through the outstanding leading actor and which condenses into an impressive study of a man who gets lost in the labyrinth of appearance and reality."

Awards

Leading actor Ronald Colman received the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar in 1948 . Another Oscar went to Miklós Rózsa for his film music. There were further nominations for the author couple Gordon / Kanin and director George Cukor.
