Joe Sawyer

Joe Sawyer (born August 29, 1906 in Guelph , Ontario , † April 21, 1982 in Ashland , Oregon ; actually Joseph Sauers ) was a Canadian film actor with German roots.

Life

Sawyer was born in 1906 as the son of German immigrants in Guelph, Ontario, under the name Joseph Sauers. He gained his first experience as an actor at the Pasadena Playhouse. Because he also wanted to be a film actor, he moved to Hollywood , where he appeared in small roles in front of the camera from 1930. In his first films he still appeared under his real name, later he anglicized it to Joe Sawyer. During the 1930s he played for Warner Brothers in a number of films alongside stars such as James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart , such as in The Roaring Twenties (1939), or alongside Errol Flynn , such as in Land of the Wicked (1940) and His last command (1941).

As a busy supporting actor, he has appeared in almost 200 films over the years. In the 1950s Sawyer appeared in numerous television series, such as Sergeant Biff O'Hara in 14 episodes of the series Rin-Tin-Tin (1954-1959). In 1962 he retired from the film business to Indio in California .

In his first marriage he was married to the actress Jeane Wood, the daughter of the director Sam Wood . His marriage to his second wife June lasted until their death in 1960. Due to illness, Sawyer moved a few years before his death to his son in Ashland, Oregon, where he died of liver cancer in 1982 at the age of 75 .
