Rin Tin Tin "Rinty" (born September 10, 1918 in Lorraine , † August 10, 1932 in Los Angeles ) was a German Shepherd who was made a star with 26 films in the 1920s.

Life

Rin Tin Tin was one of two puppies who were discovered by the US soldier Lee Duncan in a shot-up stable in Lorraine towards the end of the First World War and brought to Los Angeles with them. His sister Nanette died soon after arriving in the US and was later replaced by another female of the same name.

The dog was discovered by producer Darryl F. Zanuck in a circus show and hired for a small film role with which he wanted to try out his new film camera . A Warner Brothers film crew became aware of the dog, who stepped in for a scene in which a wolf was supposed to act and completed the scene in one take . The Warner Brothers loved Rin Tin Tin so much that they hired him to make Man From Hells River , which became an overwhelming success. One of the earliest films with Rin Tin Tin is the FBO production My Dad (1922). In 1926, Rin Tin Tin "earned" $ 6,000 a week.

After making 26 films and his own radio show, "Der Wunderhund" ( The Wonderdog , 1930, which was produced live in front of an audience, but in which the radio listeners only heard him barking), Rin Tin Tin died at the age of 13 in 1932 Los Angeles in the presence of actress Jean Harlow . He was in his native France at the dog cemetery of Asnieres-sur-Seine buried. The epitaph reads: "Rin · Tin · Tin La Grande Vedette Du Cinema".

Rin Tin Tin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1625 Vine Street .

His successors were "Rin Tin Tin Jr.", which was used from 1932 to 1939 in 13 films, and "Rin Tin Tin III", which only appeared in 1939 and 1947 in one film each.

In 1935 Rin Tin Tin Jr. also had his own 12-part serial , but had to share the fame with Rex, the Wonderhorse in The Adventures of Rex and Rinty , directed by Ford Beebe and B. Reeves Eason, who also wrote the story . The series was shot in black and white, posting photos, as was not unusual at the time, but also produced in color.

Rin Tin Tin's life was directed by Danny Lerner as Rin Tin Tin - A hero on paws ( Finding Rin Tin Tin filmed, 2007).

Rantanplan , the simple-minded watchdog from the Lucky Luke adventures , which first appeared in 1960, owes its name to Rin Tin Tin. He can be seen as the counterpart of the clever German Shepherd.

The television series The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin was filmed in the United States between 1954 and 1959 with a new German Shepherd named Golden Boy Jr., named JR . JR, who no longer came from the Duncan breed, but belonged to the trainer Frank Barnes, received the Patsy Award in 1958 and 1959 . In dangerous scenes, however, he was doubled by stunt dogs. In total, the series had 164 episodes. She told the story of the little boy Rusty and his friend, the shepherd dog Rin Tin Tin, in the turmoil of the Wild West around 1888.

  • The series was shot on the set of the John Ford Western " To the Last Man " ( Fort Apache , 1948) and on 35mm motion picture footage.
  • Rin Tin Tin was the first American series to be shown on German television. The first episode was broadcast on German television on February 16, 1956 at 9:25 p.m. Only 20 episodes were broadcast until 1964.
  • In addition to the successful television series, there were also books and comics that took on the subject of Rin Tin Tin.
  • In 1976 an attempt was made to upgrade the old adventure series with newly shot scenes. Allegedly a descendant of the first Rin Tin Tin was used here with Rin Tin Tin VII. But the attempt was unsuccessful.

Between 1988 and 1993, the television series Katts and Dog was filmed in Canada . For the US market, the name was changed to Rin Tin Tin: K-9 Cop . This was the story of police officer Hank Katts and his dog Rudy. This name was also changed to Rinty for the USA. The series was broadcast on RTL under the German title Zwei wie Katz und Hund ; here the dog was named Rinnie .

A series planned for 1999 entitled The New Adventures of Rin Tin Tin was not realized.

literature

There were books about Rin Tin Tin as early as the 1920s and adventures in comics followed , which were published by Dell Comics for 10 cents from 1954 and from Gold Key from November 1963. In 1956 a coloring book was published by Whitman. Various stories, written by Monica Hill and illustrated by Mel Crawford, appeared in the A Little Golden Book series in the 1950s. Other stories with the same illustrator but written by Charles Spain Verral also appeared in the A Big Golden Book series .

Apart from the main characters, hardly anything was adopted from the series; only the cover illustration usually showed motifs with Lee Aaker (Rusty), Rin Tin Tin and mostly James Brown (Lt. Ripley Masters).
