Inspiration and staff

The film is from the newspaper article Can You Say. . . Hero? inspired by Tom Junod in Esquire from 1998. For this he interviewed Fred Rogers , an American television presenter, musician, puppeteer and producer, who was best known as the leading actor and author of the children's series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood . On May 1, 1969, Rogers had to testify before the Senate to secure funding for his series. Rogers shared what he wanted to achieve with the series and performed a song to convince Senator John O. Pastore to give $ 20 million to the public broadcasting service and media. Pastore had never seen the program, but was overwhelmed by what it said. Fred Rogers' speech is considered one of the most iconic moments in the history of public media.

Directed by Marielle Heller . The script was written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster . The soundtrack was composed by Nate Heller , the director's brother. The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 19 pieces of music, including the one sung by Tom Hanks, Won't You Be My Neighbor? , was released for download by Sony Classical on November 15, 2019.

Cast and filming

The biography tells of Fred Rogers , here in the late 1960s

Oscar winner Tom Hanks stars and plays Fred Rogers . At the premiere of the film, Hanks said Rogers knew the three secrets of happiness: “Be nice, be nice, and be nice. In all honesty, true friendliness lies in the small gestures. For example, understanding that the person serving you or filling up your gasoline may have had just as bad a day as you. Whoever understands that is nice. ”Welsh actor Matthew Rhys stars in the role of Lloyd, a version of Tom Junod. In October 2018, the engagements of the actors Enrico Colantoni , Maryann Plunkett , Tammy Blanchard , Wendy Makkena , Sakina Jaffrey , Carmen Cusack , Noah Harpster and Maddie Corman became known. Colantoni plays Bill Isler, longtime President and CEO of the Fred Rogers Company . Plunkett can be seen in the role of Fred's wife Joanne. Blanchard plays Lorraine, Lloyd's sister, Noah Harpster, Lloyd's brother-in-law Todd and Makkena, the friend of Lloyd's father Dorothy. Jaffrey plays Lloyd's editor. Cusack can be seen in the role of Margy, longtime producer of Rogers Neighborhood . Corman plays Lady Aberlin, a character on the show. Chris Cooper , Susan Kelechi Watson , Michael Masini and Kevin L. Johnson can also be seen in other roles .

The shooting took place (among other things) in Pittsburgh. The working title was You Are My Friend . Jody Lee Lipes acted as cameraman . At the end of September 2018, the first photos of Tom Hanks in the role of Rogers were published. Sound engineer James Emswiller was fatally injured during filming .

Reviews and grossing results

Tom Hanks at the premiere for the film at the Toronto International Film Festival

The film has so far won over 96 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.1 out of a possible 10 points.

Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy says there is no question that Tom Hanks is perfect for the role, as the actor's kindness and undeniable sincerity are an ideal match for the unique television personality Fred Rogers . The actor's gifts had long been taken for granted, McCarthy said, and as soon as the film was announced, it was almost taken for granted that he would be perfect for the role. However, the film critic would have found it better to see him in a few more varied situations. The film by Marielle Heller himself is a rather modest performance, though sympathetic and yet entirely predictable in its dramatic development when a cynical journalist to one of Rogers' faithful.

Frédéric Jaeger from Spiegel Online writes that the surprising thing about Heller's adaptation is that the director succeeds in playing with the predictability of the story and creating a nice tension between the skepticism of one man and the joie de vivre of the other: “In small steps, slow Changes in atmosphere, looks and gestures find the two men understanding and openness without either of them being exposed. ”The chic, romanticizing retro look of the film also sets a sign of an earlier, supposedly simpler America that is longing for again will.

The budget of around 25 million US dollars is offset by worldwide income of 64.1 million US dollars.
