The Diary of a Teenage Girl is an American film by Marielle Heller , which premiered on January 24, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival and was shown only a few days later at the Berlinale . The film was released on August 7, 2015 in US cinemas and was shown in Germany from November 19, 2015. The film is based on the novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures by Phoebe Gloeckner .

It's 1976 in San Francisco , and the Summer of Love has left its mark on the city. Dream dancers, crazy guys and also the single mother Charlotte Worthington with her 15-year-old daughter Minnie live here.
Minnie processes her thoughts and dreams in drawing comics and wants to become an artist. When her sexuality awakens, she gets little attention from her peers and finds herself ugly. But she senses that her youthful curiosity about Monroe, her unconventional mother's lover, is attractive.
Occasional consumption of beer and cannabis is normal for them and those around them. One night her mother is too lazy to go out with Monroe and sends Minnie out with him instead. The two flirt with each other and start an affair. She is overwhelmed by her first time, starts a tape diary and takes her friend Kimmie into confidence. She notices that her new self-confidence is also changing the way she radiates to her classmates.
Minnie admires the comic artist Aline Kominsky and sends her a work of her own about a walk through her city and questions about drawing technology.
Monroe begins to feel guilty and when he withdraws from Minnie, she accepts advances from a popular classmate, Ricky. However, this is soon unsettled by its unexpected maturity and intensity. Monroe also notices this change and cannot resist it several times. With Kimmie, she tries out her sexual charms in a bar by pretending to be a prostitute and offering herself to two boys. Fellatio occurs on the toilet, but afterwards the two friends are horrified by the experience and swear to each other never to do something like that again.
Her former stepfather, Pascal, calls and invites her to move in with him in New York City , but she refuses. When the mother, Charlotte, loses her job in a library , Pascal meets with Minnie and her little sister Gretl in a café and offers to help. However, Minnie does not want him to interfere, but calls for financial support. He is irritated, but sends a $ 1,000 check to Charlotte.
After a party, Minnie, Kimmie and Monroe have sex, but Minnie seems to regret it afterwards and talks about it with Kimmie. She seduces Monroe again and they take LSD together . It's a wonderful experience for her, but he has a bad trip and reveals his fear of losing her and / or getting caught. She realizes that she is over him and leaves him.
In the hippie environment, Minnie meets Tabatha, a seductive, risky lesbian , and is fascinated by her. When Charlotte finally becomes suspicious and finds Minnie's notes on Monroe, a row breaks out. Charlotte and Monroe get drunk and want to marry Minnie off to him. She flees to Tabatha and goes around the houses with her. But when they run out of money, Tabatha wants to offer Minnie to a suitor . Minnie escapes again and returns home.
After a tearful reconciliation, she finds an encouraging letter from her artistic role model Aline Kominsky. She is now more serious about her own goals and believes that she doesn't need others to be loved.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl is Marielle Heller's film debut as a director and screenwriter. Before she adapted the material for the screen, she staged the literature as a play. The film was shot in San Francisco, USA, and filming ended in 2014.

The soundtrack for the film, released on August 7, 2015 by Rhino Records , includes 13 songs, most of which are supposed to reflect the mood of the 1970s. The composer Nate Heller contributed two pieces. The song Dreamsong was one of 74 songs shortlisted for nominations in the Best Movie Song category at the 2016 Academy Awards .

Reviews
The film hit the taste of 94 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of 152 total critics). Focus Online says: "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" is quite intelligent coming-of-age cinema in good American tradition, and at the same time a lot more: If you like, you can also see this film as a strong, if at no time dogged feminism- Read the plea. [...] Although there are some very revealing scenes and the film can only be seen in England, for example, from the age of 18, director Heller is always respectful of her protagonist. Heller tells of the inner and outer struggles of a teenager in a very sensitive and sometimes funny way, without ever exhibiting them in an overly striking or voyeuristic way. Fritz judges: The Diary Of A Teenage Girl has the potential to become a cult film.

At the International Film Festival in Berlin won The Diary of a Teenage Girl in 2015 the Grand Prix in the category Generation 14plus . Heller also won the Edinburgh International Film Festival ("Best International Feature Film") and the Palm Springs International Film Festival ("Directors to Watch") with the film. She was also named Best New Filmmaker by the Boston Society of Film Critics in 2015 for her work . Brandon Trost received an award for his camera work at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival . Heller was honored in the category Best Debut Film at the Independent Spirit Awards in February 2016 . There were also nominations in the categories Best Screenplay Debut and Best Actress ( Bel Powley ).
