David Paul Scofield , CH , CBE , (born January 21, 1922 in Hurstpierpoint , now West Sussex , England , † March 19, 2008 in Sussex , England) was a British actor . He was considered one of the leading Shakespeare actors of his generation. Scofield won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1967 for his portrayal of Thomas Mores in A Man for Every Season .

Life

Paul Scofield was one of the great mimes in British theater. He was considered a notable figure in British theater history; This is mainly due to his Shakespeare interpretations. He played his most famous role in 1966 in Robert Bolt's play A Man in Every Season . He received a Tony Award for his performance as Thomas More in the Broadway production and an Oscar for the same role in Fred Zinnemann 's film of the same name .

Despite the great success of the film, the stage remained his main field of activity. In 2004 the members of the Royal Shakespeare Company voted the best Shakespeare interpretation of all time. Paul Scofield ranked first among the male actors for his role as King Lear in 1962.

In 2001, however, after repeated insistence from friends and colleagues, he accepted acceptance into the Order of Companie of Honor . Paul Scofield died of leukemia in March 2008 . Scofield had been married to British actress Joy Parker since 1943 , and they have a son and daughter.
