Jack Gilford , (born July 25, 1907 in New York , New York ; † June 2, 1990 ibid; actually Jacob Gellman ) was an American actor who was best known for his comedic roles.

During the McCarthy era in the 1950s, like his colleague Zero Mostel , he was on the "black list" and was banned from working.

Gilford was nominated twice for the Tony Award for his work in musicals: as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) for Toll the old Romans drove it ( A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum , 1963) and as Best Actor (Musical ) in Cabaret (1967).

Fans and viewers of the successful US sitcom Golden Girls should also know Gilford as the short-term husband of Sophia Petrillo, played by Estelle Getty .
