biography

Estelle Scher was the daughter of the Polish-Jewish immigrants Sarah and Charles Scher. Her father opened a glassware business that was eventually taken over by Arthur Gettleman. In 1947 she married Gettleman, from whose surname she derived her stage name.

After training as an actor, Getty quickly got an engagement in New York and soon got into film. She first became internationally known for her role as Sophia Petrillo in the television series Golden Girls , which was filmed in the USA from 1985 to 1992 and then broadcast worldwide. In it, she played the sarcastic, humorous and experienced senior citizen of a four-woman flat , for which she was awarded a Golden Globe in 1986 and an Emmy Award in 1988 . She also appeared in the role of Sophia in the follow-up series Golden Palace , which was filmed and broadcast from 1992 to 1993.

After the end of Golden Girls and Golden Palace , Estelle Getty played the role of Sophia until 1995 as a regularly recurring supporting role in the series Harrys Nest ( Empty Nest ), which started in 1988 as a spin off of the Golden Girls . Sophia also appeared in several episodes of the series Hello Sister! ( Nurses ), which in turn was conceived in 1991 as an offshoot of Empty Nest . Estelle Getty was the only Golden Girls actress to appear in all three series and whose character had been seen on television for the longest time. With another appearance in the series Blossom , she embodied the Sophia Petrillo over 255 episodes in five different series.

Estelle Getty also starred in various films, including Stuart Little and Stop! Or my mommy shoots! (with Sylvester Stallone ). After Getty allegedly contracted Parkinson's disease , she withdrew from the public eye in 2000. It was later revealed that she suffered from Lewy body dementia . After the death of her husband in 2004, Estelle Getty lived in seclusion in Los Angeles and died there in 2008 a few days before her 85th birthday and was buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California. She left two sons.
