Marty Feldman (1969)

Martin Alan "Marty" Feldman (born July 8, 1934 in London , † December 2, 1982 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was a British - American comedian , writer , actor and director .

Life

Feldman's grandfather, Hyman Bondor, immigrated to England from Russia and changed his family name to Feldman . Marty was born the son of Islington's Jewish tailor Myer Feldman and his wife Cecilia "Cissie" (née Crook) in London's University College Hospital . He left school at the age of 15 to become a jazz trumpeter , but soon discovered his passion for comedy .

Feldman made his first appearance with two friends in Morris, Marty and Mitch , a comedy influenced by the Marx Brothers . In 1954 he met a like-minded person with Barry Took, with whom he wrote texts for radio productions, such as B. Educating Archie , We're in Business, and The Army Game . The TV show Bootsie and Snudge , on which Feldman was the chief writer, became the most watched on British television.

In the summer of 1961 Feldman was diagnosed with severe hyperthyroidism , which should permanently change his appearance (with exophthalmos and strabismus ) and led to the appearance under which he is still remembered today.

In the 1960s he worked for several television productions for the BBC and was particularly successful with Round the Horne . In 1966 Feldman became chief writer for the television series The Frost Report , which would have a lasting impact on the future of British comedy - numerous well-known authors and actors, such as Barry Cryer , Michael Palin , Terry Jones and John Cleese (the latter three would later become the founders of Monty Python ) made their debut here. Another well-known show with Feldman's collaboration was At Last the 1948 Show with Tim Brooke-Taylor and the later Pythons John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle (in smaller roles). He finally appeared in front of the camera in At Last The 1948 Show ; and the character he embodied as the "strange little man" was a great success and earned him his own comedy show on BBC 2.

In the late 1960s, Feldman switched to American television, where he appeared in skits on the Dean Martin Show . From 1970 he took over their entire summer agency (The Gold Diggers of London) . That same year he got his own show, The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine .

Feldman starred in successful US film productions in the 1970s, such as Mel Brooks ' film Frankenstein Junior as Igor , in Gene Wilder's Sherlock Holmes' clever brother and in Mel Brooks' last madness: Silent Movie . Then he started directing himself. His first directorial work was the comedy Three Foreign Legionaries , in which he also starred. In addition, under his direction, Brazen and God-fearing arose .

In the cinema, Feldman was most often dubbed by Joachim Kemmer , while he was voiced by Dieter Hallervorden in the German version of the Marty Feldman Show named after him .

Marty Feldman died of heart failure at the age of 48 in a hotel in Mexico City while filming the pirate parody Dotterbart . The reason for this remained unclear. He was buried in the Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles , California in the Garden of Heritage .
