Harold Huth

Harold Huth (born January 20, 1892 in Huddersfield , United Kingdom , † October 26, 1967 in London ) was a British actor , film director and film producer .

Life

Huth, originally from northern England, worked as a car salesman at a young age before he was discovered for the film. He started his screen career at the age of 35. First he appeared with supporting roles in silent comedies, period dramas and war films. In the first years of the sound film, its roles gradually increased, and Huth often played elegant and cultured gentlemen, but several times also people from other cultures (French nobles, Egyptian doctors and the like). At times health problems forced him to retire from acting, and Huth earned his living as the casting director for the production company Gainsborough Pictures and the British subsidiary of MGM . In this capacity, Harold Huth was also involved in the ambitious productions Der Lausbub aus Amerika , Die Zitadelle and Auf Wiedersehen, Mr. Chips from 1937 to 1939 . In 1939 he returned to active film work and made his debut as a film director with “ Hell's Cargo ”, an “ adventure film promoting the Entente Cordiale idea”.

Immediately after the beginning of the Second World War , his old employer, MGM, hired him as a film producer (" Busman's Honeymoon "). Harold Huth subsequently alternated regularly between the activities of a director and producer and had his most successful period when he was appointed chief producer of Gainsborough Pictures in 1943. In the following years he produced very popular and cash-rich costume fabrics, historical romances and melodramas, which were often criticized in a malicious way, for the female audience in particular. Since the 1950s, Huth was also active as a director and producer for television and worked, for example, for Douglas Fairbanks ' production company as well as for Warwick Television Films Ltd. Huth's few theatrical productions were mostly dramatic stories without great depth or artistic ambition.
