Three marriages (Original title: They Were Sisters ) is a British drama film directed by Arthur Crabtree from 1945 with Phyllis Calvert , James Mason , Hugh Sinclair and Anne Crawford in the leading roles. The film was produced by Gainsborough Pictures based on the novel They Were Sisters by Dorothy Whipple .

action

The life stories of the three sisters, Lucy (Phyllis Calvert), Charlotte (Dulcie Gray) and Vera (Anne Crawford) are told.

The film begins with a dance in 1919 , where the personalities of the protagonists are introduced and gradually portrayed in their psychological state through advertising and the subsequent marriage to their husbands. Although the sisters have stayed close together over the years, their characters and the paths of life and love that life imposes on them develop entirely differently.

Lucy is the woman with the greatest psychological stability of the three, a sensitive and practical woman in a happy marriage, whose greatest sadness is that she cannot have children. But she cleverly compensates for this fact with her affection, which she distributes evenly between her nephews and nieces.

Vera is blessed with a one-child relationship, but her life is monotonous and loveless, she is restless and bored from her drab life at home, so she indulges her appetite for adventure and excitement through a series of flirts with other men, sometimes beyond the limit of what is socially and morally acceptable.

Charlotte is an intimidated and fearful person who suffers from the severe physical and emotional yoke of her cruel and ruthless husband, who manipulates her and constantly humiliates her in front of their three children.

Reviews

“The marital fate of three sisters who are closely connected and who marry very unequal men; one of them turns out to be a sadistic psychopath. Gripping colossal drama with criminalistic elements and good acting performances. "
