Yvonne Mitchell (born July 7, 1915 in London , † March 24, 1979 there ) was a British actress .

Life

Yvonne Mitchell began her theater career as a teenager. She rarely appeared in films, but then all the more impressively. She made her film debut in 1941 in Love on the Dole , and had her first speaking role in 1949 in a British Pushkin film adaptation of The Queen of Spades . In 1955 she received the British Film Academy Award for best British actress for the film The Divided Heart . At the 1957 Berlinale she was awarded the Silver Bear as best actress for her role in The Woman in a Dressing Gown. In addition to film work for the cinema, she also appeared in television productions. She was particularly successful here with theater and literature adaptations. As early as 1953, the Daily Mail newspaper named her "Most Popular TV Actress of the Year".

In addition to acting, Yvonne Mitchell was also known as the author of several children's books and also wrote a biography about the French writer Colette . Her autobiography appeared in 1957 .

Mitchell was married to a film and theater critic. After working on the stage for more than four decades, she died of cancer in 1979 at the age of 63.
