Here in Saxony he was involved in agricultural associations . He tried to improve the farmers' expertise through lectures. Numerous publications , including his book Landwirthschaftliche Briefe (1861), served this goal . In 1866 he sold his estate and moved to Dresden, where he worked full-time in agricultural associations and as a specialist author .

In 1867 he was a member of the Reichstag for the 19th constituency of the Kingdom of Saxony.

In Mecklenburg , too , he was interested in agricultural associations . In 1872 he founded a "Agriculture Association for Small Farmers" and in 1873 the "Agriculture Association Gazette" for small farmers. He played a decisive role in the establishment of an agricultural research station in Rostock (1875) and a dairy research station (1876). For health reasons he gave up his professorship in 1879. Since then he has lived on a manor in Oberschönfeld near Bunzlau that he had bought . There he continued to work as a writer.
