Joseph Murray (born January 3, 1987 in Levenshulme , Manchester ) is an English boxer . He won a bronze bantamweight medal at the 2007 World Amateurs Championship in Chicago .

Life

Joseph Murray comes from a boxer family, his older brother John Murray is the British lightweight professional champion (as of May 2008). He himself started boxing as a teenager at boxing club Moss Side ABC and later moved to boxing club Broadshaw ABC . His trainer is Joe Gallagher. He fought his first fight in November 2000.

In 2003 he became the English student champion and in the same year took 3rd place at the European student championship in Rome in the weight class up to 46 kg body weight behind Ozkan Gorkhan, Turkey and György Szalai from Hungary . In 2004 Joe Murray became English junior light flyweight champion in Huddersfield by defeating James Cole. In 2005 he was used for the first time in an international match between England and the USA among the seniors. He defeated Jorge Diaz clearly on points (21: 9).

In 2006 Joe Murray started at the EU championship in Pécs , where he won over Mirsad Ahmeti from Croatia (24:22) and Vittorio Parrinello from Italy (30:22) on points and lost in the final against Zsolt Bedák from Hungary on points (12: 36). At the European Championship of the same year in Plovdiv , Joe Murray managed to win a point over Rahib Najafow from Azerbaijan (29:17) in the round of 16 . In the quarter-finals he was defeated by Detelin Dalakliew from Bulgaria with 18:34 points, so he was eliminated and took 5th place with three other boxers.

The year 2007 turned out to be the most successful in Joe Murray's career to date. He finished 3rd at the EU bantamweight championship in Dublin with a victory over Vittoria Parrinello and a defeat in the semifinals against Denis Makarov from Germany and also took an excellent 3rd place at the world bantamweight championship in Chicago . On the way there he defeated Maximiliano Marquez from Argentina by breaking off in the 3rd stake, Carlos Cuadras from Mexico (28:19), Bruno Julie , Mauritius (26:19) and Gu Yu from China (14:11) each on points before he was beaten in the semifinals by Enchbatyn Badar-Uugan from Mongolia on points (11:20).

In 2008 Joe Murray was used at the Olympic Games in Beijing and thus preferred the two-time English champion of 2007 and 2008 Luke Campbell . In Beijing he met the Chinese Gu Yu in the first round , whom he had defeated at the World Championships in Chicago . In Beijing, however, Gu Yu turned the tables and beat Murray with 17: 7 hits on points. For Murray only the 17th place remained, which he shared with all losers in the preliminary round.
