The Pula Film Festival (Croatian: Festival igranog filma u Puli) is the oldest Croatian / Yugoslav film festival and has been held in Pula since 1954 .

In 1954 the first festival for Croatian films was held and in 1957 it was expanded to include Yugoslav films. The festival takes place almost exclusively in the open air in the amphitheater , in front of the Arch of the Sergians and in the inner courtyards of the fort. The award ceremonies are held in the traditional cinema Valli . There are no nominations in advance. The winners will be announced live during the festival. The juries are made up of experts; The one responsible for Croatian films consists of five to six people and that of international films consists of three people.

The Croatian film prizes "Golden Arenas" are awarded at this festival in different categories, such as best leading actor. In addition, the Golden Gate Pula and the Golden Birch Award are given as audience awards, and the Young Cinephiles Award and the Young Film Lovers Jury Award as young talent awards.

The festival is characterized by a Croatian and an international program. Since 2001 it has had the status of a European film festival . From 2005 onwards, prizes were awarded for films with a special European intention, and since 2009 the festival has also had a part of the program that deals retrospectively with a particular director. So far these have been Pedro Almodóvar , Giuseppe Tornatore , Claude Chabrol and James Ivory, among others .
