Jeffrey Dell

Jeffrey Dell (* 7. May 1899 in Shoreham-by-Sea , West Sussex , England as John Edward Flowers Dell ; † 24. February 1985 in Haslemere , Surrey , England) was a British film director and screenwriter .

life and career

Jeffrey Dell, born in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex in 1899, began writing screenplays for the cinema in his late twenties. 1932 was thus deferred payment of Lothar Mendes , a film drama with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Sullivan in the lead roles. In 1935 he delivered the script version for Zoltan Korda for the adventure film Bosambo with Paul Robeson and Leslie Banks .

At the beginning of the 1940s he took a seat in the director's chair and filmed, among other things, his own screenplay in 1944 for Just Don't Fear with Richard Greene and Patricia Medina .

In 1947 he founded the production company Independent Artists Ltd. together with the film producer Julian Wintle .

In 1951 he directed the crime film The Man in Black for his own production company with the cast Edward Underdown , Maxwell Reed , Natasha Parry and William Hartnell . The film music was composed by Hubert Clifford .

Jeffrey Dell wrote around 30 screenplays in his career and directed several times himself. Dell died on February 24, 1985 in Haslemere, Surrey.
