Natasha Parry

Natasha Parry (born December 2, 1930 in London - † July 22, 2015 in La Baule-Escoublac , France ) was a British actress .

Life

Parry was born the daughter of British director Gordon Parry (1908–1981). As a teenager she attended the Arts Educational Theater School in London. Her acting career began at the age of twelve. The director and actor Michael Redgrave hired her for the play Wingless Victory by Maxwell Anderson at the Phoenix Theater in London. At age 14, she starred in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream alongside John Gielgud and Peggy Ashcroft at the Royal Haymarket Theater in London.

In 1951 she married the director and actor Peter Brook , in whose productions she appeared frequently in the following years. She played in 1953 in Brooks' legendary television production for CBS , the role of Cordelia in King Lear at the side of Orson Welles . In 1968 Parry appeared in Brooks' experimental production of Shakespeare's late work The Tempest at the Round House Theater in London. She was part of the original ensemble of the Center International de Recherche Théâtrale (CIRT) founded by Brook in 1970 in Paris , from which the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord emerged , which still exists today. Parry appeared under the direction of Brooks at the Théâtre des bouffes du Nord in 1971 in Orghast , a theater project with texts by Ted Hughes , in 1972 in The Conference of the Birds (story for the theater by Jean-Claude Carrière based on the poem Mantic Uttar by Farid Udin Attar ), 1974 in Timon von Athen and 1975 in The Ik (based on The Mountain People by Colin Turnbull ).

Parry returned to England in the mid-1970s and played Blanche DuBois in the play Endstation Sehnsucht by Tennessee Williams in 1975 at the Liverpool Playhouse Theater . Parry appeared several times with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 1970s : 1978 as Phaedra in Hippolytos (director: Ron Daniels) with Michael Pennington and Patrick Stewart as partners, 1978/1979 as Mariana in Maß für Maß (director: Barry Kyle) and 1979 as Melanija in Children of the Sun by Maxim Gorky (director: Terry Hands).

In 1981 she took on the role of Lyubov Andrejewna Ranjewskaja in the comedy The Cherry Orchard in Paris, again under the direction of Peter Brook . In 1984 she played with Marcello Mastroianni in Tchin, Tchin at the Théâtre de la Gaité-Montparnasse. In 1989 she played at the Orange Tree Theater in London the title role of Mrs. Warren's Profession (Mrs. Warren's Profession) by George Bernard Shaw . At the Almeida Theater in London followed in 1991 the role of the mother-in-law in Madame de Sade by Yukio Mishima . In Paris she played at the Théâtre des bouffes du Nord in over 350 performances of the play Happy Days by Samuel Beckett and went on a world tour with it. In 2001 she appeared in London at the Young Vic Theater as Gertrude in Peter Brooks' production of Hamlet . In 2004/2005 she appeared with Michel Piccoli at the Comédie des Champs-Elysées in Paris and at the Barbican Pit Theater in London in Ta main dans la mienne , a staged reading of the correspondence between Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper . In 2009 she played Théâtre des bouffes du Nord in Love Is My Sin , a stage adaptation and production of Shakespeare's Sonnets by Peter Brook. At the Theater for a New Audience , she performed Love Is A Sin in March / April 2010 in New York with Michael Pennington.

Under the direction of various other directors, Parry starred in Die Nacht des Leguan (director: Andréas Voutsinas ) (1977 at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord), Kabale und Liebe (director: Jean-Marie Simon), Richard III. (Directed by Francis Huster) and in 1988 Elektra for the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by Deborah Warner .

Parry also took on roles in movies and television productions from the late 1940s . However, their screen appearances remained largely sporadic. In 1954 she starred in Darling of Women at Gérard Philipe's side, directed by René Clément . Parry gained fame as a film actress especially through her portrayal of Peggy , the supposed "best friend" of Doris Day in the thriller Midnight Spikes . In 1968 she was the Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet by Franco Zeffirelli . In 1981 she was seen together with Jane Birkin and Michél Piccoli in the melodrama A Little Slut . In 1982 she starred in Le Lit , the debut film by Belgian director Marion Hänsel .

In 1977 she played in the British television series Love for Lydia in the role of Mrs. Aspen, the mother of the female lead. Natasha Parry died of a stroke on July 22, 2015 at the age of 84 while on vacation in the French seaside resort of La Baule-Escoublac.
