Andréas Voutsinas

Andréas Voutsinas ( Greek Ανδρέας Βουτσινάς ; born August 22, 1932 in Khartoum , Sudan ; † June 8, 2010 in Athens , Greece ) was a Greek actor and director .

Life

Voutsinas completed an acting training at the Actors Studio in New York from 1957 , where he had lessons from Lee Strasberg, among others . Voutsinas worked as an actor and director on Broadway in New York in the 1950s and 1960s . In 1958 he played the role of Eliphaz in the play JB by Archibald MacLeish at the ANTA Playhouse . In 1962 he directed the comedy The Fun Couple with Jane Fonda . In 1967, he joined then at the Longacre Theater in The Natural Look of Leonora Thuna in partnership with Gene Hackman , Jerry Orbach and Brenda Vaccaro on.

Voutsinas achieved particular fame as a film actor as a performer in the film comedies of Mel Brooks . He took on the role of the homosexual partner and roommate (" Common Law Assistant ") Carmen Ghia in Brooks' comedy Spring for Hitler . He had received the role on the recommendation of Anne Bancroft , a good friend and colleague who he knew from their time together at the Actors Studio , and who was Mel Brooks' partner at the time. Directed by Mel Brooks, he also starred in his films The Twelve Chairs (1970) and Mel Brooks - The crazy history of the world (1981).

In 1969 he was seen with Suzy Kendall in the war drama Miss Doctor by Alberto Lattuada , then in 1971 together with La Polaca as Alvarez in the adventure film The Rum Street . Voutsinas settled permanently in France in 1968 and took on roles in several French films. In 1988 he played a priest in Luc Besson's film In Rush of the Deep , and in 1993 a director in The Little Apocalypse of Costa-Gavras . The French Minister of Culture Jack Lang awarded him the Chevalier de l ' Ordre national du Mérite in 1986 and the Commandeur de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1992 .

In the 1990s Voutsinas worked again increasingly for cinema and television in Greece. He was there, among others, in the comedy film Gynaikes dilitirio , in the television series Prova nifikou and in a guest role in the comedy Safe Sex as a casting director.

As a director, Voutsinas has directed over 130 performances during his career. In France he staged, among others, Elektra by Jean Giraudoux (1971 at the Bellac Theater Festival ), Closed Society (1976 at the Théâtre Gérard Philipe, Paris), The Night of the Iguana (1977 at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord with Natasha Parry ), Miss Julie ( 1983 Théâtre Édouard VII, Paris), Exiles (1984 at the Théâtre du Rond-Point, Paris) and plays by Sam Shepard and Tom Stoppard . He has also directed at the National Theater in Thessaloniki , the Athens Theater Festival and the Festival of Epidaurus (1982 Helena von Euripides ).

Voutsinas also worked as an acting teacher and led acting workshops at the Theater Des Cinquante in Paris . He worked as an acting coach with Anne Bancroft, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, among others .

He died on June 8, 2010 in an Athens hospital.
