Edward Underdown

Edward Underdown (born December 3, 1908 in London , † December 15, 1989 in Hampshire ) was a British actor.

Life

Edward Underdown attended Eton College and initially worked as a jockey and rider before he began his acting career on stage in the early 1930s. From 1934 he also appeared in movies. Most of them were minor roles, often playing police inspectors, government officials, or business people. In the post-war period, some leading roles were also added, for example in the crime thriller The Man in Black Underdown was tall and handsome, but many of his characters were rather docile and overly correct - for example as the aristocratic husband of Jennifer Jones in Chess the Devil from the year 1953. In the course of the 1950s he was very big with major supporting roles in films such as Little Jockey and The Yellow Hell , but later his cinema roles (such as an Air Force officer in the James Bond film Fireball ) were often small. Underdown has also appeared in numerous British television series, most recently as Zastor in four episodes of Doctor Who in 1980 .

Underdown was a World War II veteran and rose to the rank of captain. He was married from 1953 to the divorce in 1964 with Rosemary Sybella Violet Grimston, a daughter of the British politician and diplomat Baron Robert Grimston of Westbury (1897-1979).
