Ca 'Corner della Regina is a Venetian palace located in the Santa Croce sestiere on the Grand Canal .

history

The Corner or Cornaro family was one of the oldest patrician families in Venice , tracing its origins back to the Romans. Caterina Cornaro , Queen of Cyprus , was born in 1454 in a smaller Gothic palace on the site of the current building. The nickname "della Regina" is derived from her. Today's baroque building is much larger and was built after buying several neighboring buildings. It is one of the last grand palaces in Venice. The building was built by the architect Domenico Rossi from 1724 to 1727 for the procurator of San Marco Andrea Corner (1671–1743). Because of the complicated nature of the site, the building was designed more in height than in width. Catterino Cornaro, the last of the branch of the Corner of S. Cassian, bequeathed the palace to Pope Pius VII. The building then became a Monte di Pietà and finally the seat of the historical archive of the Venice Biennale . After a thorough restoration between 2004 and 2006, the palace was put up for sale by the Municipality of Venice.

description

The nearby Ca 'Pesaro by Baldassare Longhena apparently served as a model for the Ca' Corner della Regina. This is particularly noticeable in the arrangement of the windows on the side facade. The palace has a slim facade, with a tall central gate. The ground floor and mezzanine are made of Istrian limestone in a rustic style. The palace has two piani nobili , the first with Ionic and the second with Corinthian columns. The interior furnishings from the late 18th century are a.o. a. by Giovanni Scajario and Costantino Cedini .
