Santa Maria della Salute in Venice

Baldassare Longhena (* 1598 (?) Perhaps in Venice , because his parents from Longhena ( province of Brescia ) lived in Maroggia ; † February 18, 1682 ibid) was an Italian builder who worked almost exclusively in Venice and the places around the lagoon .

He learned from Vincenzo Scamozzi . One of his most important buildings is the church of Santa Maria della Salute , built from 1631 to 1687, which shows the influence of its master and that of Andrea Palladio . It was built on the occasion of the redemption of the city from a three-year plague wave. In 1640 he completed the Procuratie nuove that his master had begun in the meantime .

In 1623 he worked on the restructuring of the Giustinian Lolin Palace. This was followed by a series of churches and church facades, among them the cathedral in Chioggia , begun in 1624 , which was rebuilt after a fire.

From 1648 to 1660 he worked at the Palazzo Belloni Battagia , from 1656 to 1663 at the Chiesa degli Scalzi . He also worked on two other palaces, namely the Ca 'Rezzonico (1667–1682) and the Ca' Pesaro (1659–1682). He rarely worked outside of Venice, for example in Loreo , Bassano del Grappa or Conegliano .
