Santa Croce (Sestiere di Venezia)
Santa Croce is one of the six districts ( sestiere ) of Venice and is located on the western edge of the city, with an area of 94 hectares . The island of Tronchetto forms the westernmost part of this district.
The sestiere derives its name from the ancient church of Santa Croce, which was demolished in the 19th century to make way for the Giardini Papadopoli . In 2006, Santa Croce had about 5500 inhabitants, based on the parishes of San Nicola da Tolentino (with SS. Nome di Gesù or Santa Chiara), San Simeon Grande (San Simeone Profeta) (with San Simon Piccolo) and San Giacomo dall'Orio ( with San Zandegolà).
