San Simeone Piccolo (also called San Simone e Giuda) is a church in the Santa Croce sestiere in Venice . Located on the Grand Canal opposite the Santa Lucia railway station , it provides a first impression of Venice for most visitors to the city.

Church patrons are the apostles Simon and Jude Thaddäus .

history

The medieval predecessor church, a longitudinal building, ran parallel to the Grand Canal and was in a state of decay in the early 18th century. In 1718 the architect Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto was commissioned with the new building, which he completed in 1738. With this building he created one of the first classicist buildings in Italy and probably the last completed church in the Republic of Venice.

The Priestly Society of St. Petrus has been active in San Simeone since 2006 with Father Konrad zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg .

description

View of the interior of the church.

San Simeone Piccolo is the first Venetian church on a circular floor plan. The architect gave up the liturgical orientation towards the East and turned the axis so that it overlooks the Grand Canal. The facade consists of a portico with four columns and two three-part supports on the sides, as well as a triangular gable with a relief in the classical manner, depicting the martyrdom of the titular saints Simon Zelotes and Judas Thaddäus . A somewhat disproportionate oval dome crowned by a lantern sits on top of the round structure .

The interior expands to form deep niches, flanked by supports and free columns. The main sanctuary is raised over three steps, enlarged by side niches and covered with a dome.

There is a burial place in the high plinth of the church; four corridors emanate from an octagonal central room. They are decorated with frescoes of the stations of the cross and depictions of death and give the impression of catacombs .
