Lillian Theresa Boutté (born August 6, 1949 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American jazz singer who was known for her cheerful stage presence and the New Orleans blues.

Live and act

Lillian Boutté won a singing competition at the age of eleven. She sang in the gospel choir while studying music at the Xavier University of Louisiana . During this time she was discovered by Allen Toussaint and from 1973 onwards she was the background singer for recordings by James Booker , Patti Labelle , the Neville Brothers , the Pointer Sisters and Dr. John engaged.

Between 1979 and 1984 she was on tour as an actress and singer in the musical One Mo 'Time . Together with the Olympia Brass Band , she released a gospel album in 1980; In 1982 she recorded her first jazz album. In addition to numerous albums with her own band, she also played records with Dr. John, Humphrey Lyttelton , Peter “Banjo” Meyer , the European New Orleans All Stars around Chris Barber and Oscar Klein as well as duo records with Dirk Raufeisen and Christian Willisohn . In 2004 she performed with Christian Willisohn, his band and other artists at the Bowers & Wilkins Rhythm'n'Blues Festival in Halle (Westphalia) .

In 1986 she was awarded the title of New Orleans Music Ambassador . After Louis Armstrong, she was the second jazz legend in the city's history to receive this honor.

In Europe she performed with productions such as Spirit of Louisiana (1992), but also with her own band and her husband Thomas L'Etienne, as well as with the Barrelhouse Jazz Band , the Maryland Jazz Band of Cologne and the Breda All Stars and with Pee Wee Ellis ( Spirit of Christmas , 2013). She can also be seen in the award-winning documentary Piano Players Barely Play Together (1982) alongside pianists Professor Longhair , Allen Toussaint and Tuts Washington ; She appeared in a supporting role in Alan Parker's film Angel Heart (1986) and was involved in the soundtrack with Brownie McGhee .

illness

Although suffering from Alzheimer's , she performed with Christian Willisohn on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Incontri ( Rohrbach (Ilm) ) in 2015 . Since July 2016, she has been cared for by her family at home in New Orleans.
