René Franc

René Franc (born December 7, 1929 in Algiers , † April 2, 2002 ) was a French jazz clarinetist and soprano saxophonist in the tradition of Sidney Bechet .

Live and act

Franc started on the violin and switched to the clarinet in jazz in 1946 . He played in the orchestras of Pierre Braslavsky , Claude Luter and André Réwéliotty and with Sidney Bechet. From 1956 he played with his own band as well as with Albert Nicholas , Bill Coleman , Peanuts Holland , Hal Singer, among others . He also toured Europe with his own band. He also toured with Herbert Christ and Eddy Davis in the Hot Jazz Orchestra of Europe (1976). He recorded several times under his own name. Tom Lord recorded 29 recordings between 1949 and 1999 in his jazz discography.

In 1980 he received the prize of the Prix ​​Sidney Bechet . He is the father of the soprano saxophonist Olivier Franc , who initially also worked in his band.
