Olivier Franc

Olivier Franc (* the thirtieth October 1953 ) is a French soprano saxophonist of traditional jazz .

Live and act

Franc, the son of clarinetist René Franc , who accompanied Sidney Bechet for a long time , began his career in the early 1970s. In 1974 he played in the Gilbert Leroux Orchestra . In 1975 he appeared in his father's band, with whom he made several tours in Germany. In 1976 he founded his own band. A joint tour with Oscar Peterson and Claude Luter in 1978 brought him great popularity in France. In the meantime his band, with which he presented himself internationally, mainly cultivates the repertoire of Bechet. He has also given concerts with the sextet of Wynton Marsalis and Bob Wilber as well as with the quintet of Bechet's son, Daniel-Sidney Bechet, and the International Trio (around Reimer von Essen and Trevor Richards with David Boeddinghouse). Between 1976 and 2016 he was involved in 46 recordings of jazz albums.

Prizes and awards

Franc was already honored with the Prix ​​Sidney Bechet for 1978. For his albums Swing Folies and Ellington Mood he received the Prix ​​Musiciens Français du Hot Club de France in 1997 and 2012 respectively . Since 2006 he has been playing the Bechet soprano saxophone, which a fan bought for him.
