Trevor Richards (born August 29, 1945 in Bexhill-on-Sea , England ) is a German jazz musician (drums) and bandleader of British origin, who is at home in New Orleans and Europe and is known for his diverse work in the field of classical jazz .

Life

Richards studied European Studies with the minor subjects Music Theory (1964-5) and Linguistics (graduated in 1972). His interest in music and music history led Richards to the USA. From 1966 to 1968 he lived in New Orleans . There he learned the art of classic drumming a. a. by Zutty Singleton , Cozy Cole (both former drummers of Louis Armstrong ) and Ray Bauduc .

Richards maintains the tradition of the classical trio instrumentation (one wind instrument, piano, drums); in this line-up there were numerous appearances and tours with musicians such as George Lewis , Punch Miller, Herb Hall, Chris Barber , Reimer von Essen and Dr. John as well as studio recordings. In the 1980s he was a member of Art Hodes ' International Trio and the Original Camellia Jazz Band of New Orleans ; In 1989 he worked on Jacques Gauthé's album Someday, Sweetheart .

The Trevor Richards New Orleans Trio celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2009. From 1982 to 2005, Richards was also co-leader with Clive Wilson of the Original Camellia Jazz Band from New Orleans, with whom he toured throughout Southeast Asia from 1985 to 1989.

Richards' range of stylistic variations includes all styles including swing . He is probably the only one who can authentically present all those stylistic elements that the New Orleans drummers developed.

Richards lived alternately in Europe and New Orleans until Cyclone Katrina largely destroyed his house, which had to be abandoned. As a result, he has lived in Germany ever since; Large parts of his collection of jazz records, specialist books and historical drums went on loan (Trevor Richards Collection) to the International Jazz Archive in Eisenach , where Richards occasionally acts as a specialist advisor for exhibitions. Like other Britons living in Germany, he took over German citizenship in 2018 after the Brexit referendum .

Prizes and awards

Richards is the recipient of the highest award of the American National Endowment for the Arts (1986), was honored in 1993 by the Mayor of New Orleans for “outstanding service to the music of the city”, was “Drummer of the year” by the European specialist media press (1998 ) and received the Grand Prix de Jazz of the Hot Club de France in 2000.
