Herbert Christ (musician)
Herbert Christ (born July 25, 1942 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet , cornet , vocals ). The lead trumpeter was shaped by the stylistic processing of many personal encounters with American musicians of hot jazz and swing .
Live and act
After classical training with Fritz Stähr in Frankfurt am Main, Christ was instructed in jazz harmony by Carlo Bohländer and Emil Mangelsdorff . He played first with the Tailgate Jazz Band and from 1962 with the Sidewalk Jazz Band and the Blues and Stomps Company . Then he played with the Jazz Lips in Hamburg, with whom he is currently performing; in Frankfurt he performed with the Preservations Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans and in 1972 at the Hot Jazz Festival in Frankfurt am Main in a King Oliver workshop with Abbi Hübner and Eberhard Jirzik, in order to found his New Orleans Babies the following year , with whom he (among others with Herbie Hess ) was active in the Rhine-Main area.
Christ also played in the Frankfurt Ragtime Society around Klaus Pehl (album 1981) and is part of an all-star ensemble (with Reimer von Essen and Horst Schwarz ) that has been performing under the name Jazz Classics since 1985 and recorded several albums. He was also a member of Trevor Richards' New Orleans Band and founded his Echoes of New Orleans jazz band, which is still active. Since the 1970s he has also accompanied touring soloists such as Alton Purnell , Louis Nelson and Eddy Davis (together with René Franc ; Hot Jazz Orchestra of Europe 1976). In the early 1970s he also played with the Orighinal Storyville Jazz Band Vienna .
He also performed with the Matchbox Blues Band in memory of Louis Jordan. In recent years Christ has been committed to many jazz festivals and tours through Switzerland, Hungary, England, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, for example with the Milano Jazz Gang . Formations under his own name and with Hotter Than Five together with Claus Jacobi from Berlin. He also performed in a duo with the pianists Paolo Alderighi (as Duo di Jazz ) and Morten Gunnar Larsen (as New Orleans Joys ), but also designed programs for trumpet and church organ with the organist Jürgen Grimm. In 2008 and 2009 Joe Muranyi , Louis Armstrong's last clarinetist, brought him into his all-star band, which performed at festivals in Hungary. In 2019 he toured Europe as a guest with Syncopators , an Australian hot jazz and swing band.
Prizes and awards
In summer 2008 Christ received the Louis Armstrong Award at the Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival in Hungary .
