Joe Muranyi
Joe Muranyi (born January 14, 1928 in Martins Ferry , Ohio , † April 20, 2012 ) was an American jazz musician ( clarinet , saxophone and vocals ) of Hungarian descent.
Career
Muranyi studied music at the “ Manhattan School of Music ” and at “ Columbia University ” with Bill Russo and Simeon Bellison , the first clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic . Muranyi played in various Dixieland bands , including with Danny Barker and from 1952 to 1954 in the Red Onion Jazz Band . At the same time he worked as a record producer and was the author of cover texts for the labels Atlantic Records , Bethlehem and RCA Records . Muranyi played with Max Kaminsky , Yank Lawson and Jimmy McPartland before joining Louis Armstrong's All Star Band in 1967 , with whom he soon became friends. After his death in 1971 he played with Roy Eldridge and in 1975 became a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band . In 1983 Muranyi founded the Classic Jazz Quartet with Dick Sudhalter , Dick Wellstood and Marty Grosz ; he later played in the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble and appeared as a guest soloist. Muranyi toured the world and made countless recordings while continuing to work as a record producer.
