Paul Knufflock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Knufflock , also Pawel , Paul Knobloch , († 1577 , buried November 14, 1577 in Lübeck ) was a German bookbinder , publisher and bookseller .

Life

Nothing is known about his origin, birth and youth. In 1550 he was put on record as a citizen of Lübeck and bookbinder when he undertook to produce 2000 copies of the 1550 by Ludwig Dietz in Copenhagen on behalf of King Christian III. printed Danish Bible within one year in leather with clasp, the copy for two Danish marks to bind.

At the same time he worked as an accountant (publisher and dealer). In the years 1567 and 1586 he translated the interpretation of the 90th Psalm by Martin Luther and the consolatory verses from Veit Dietrich into Low German . From the prefaces of these two books we learn that at this time he was the weighmaster on the lower scales and that his apartment was here. In 1569 he appears as the editor of a very successful anthology of prayers from earlier and more recent times and from parts of the Bible, chants and rhymes, which is named after him Knufflock's Bedebock . The book also saw various editions outside of Lübeck, several of which have his initials P. K. on the title. He had several of his editions printed by Asswerus Kröger in Lübeck.

The editions and translations provided by him are distinguished by their careful decoration with borders, metal cuts, coats of arms and wood cuts.

Knufflock "is one of the booksellers of the older days in northern Germany that have remained almost unknown, but were distinguished by their extensive business dealings and important publishing houses".
