Ludwig Dietz (* in Speyer ; † September 1, 1559 in Rostock ) was a printer and publisher .

Life

Ludwig Dietz came to Rostock around 1504. Here he worked in Hermann Barckhusen's book printing , which he took over around 1514. An important work of these years was the publication of the Low German Narrenschiff of 1519. For larger commissioned works he set up branches in the cities in which his clients were based, for example for printing and publishing a Bible translation into Low German around 1533 in Lübeck . This took place in 1532/33 under the direction of Johannes Bugenhagen . Presumably Hermann Bonnus was also involved. Dietz often worked with the wood cutter Erhart Altdorfer .

He set up a branch in Copenhagen from 1548 to 1550 to direct the printing of the Bible, which was translated into Danish by Christiern Pedersen . From this translation, King Christian III. Print 3,000 copies, an unusually high print run for the time, so that a copy could be purchased for every church in Denmark.

On April 25, 1558, Dietz became a university printer in Rostock.

Ludwig Dietz created masterpieces of early German book art and thus worked for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and political views.
