Erhard Altdorfer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erhard Altdorfer (also Erhart Altdorfer ; * probably after 1480 in Regensburg ; † after 1561 in Schwerin ) was a German draftsman , painter and master builder who worked as a court painter in Schwerin from 1512 to 1561 .

Life

Erhard Altdorfer was the younger brother of Albrecht Altdorfer , from whom he was probably also trained and with whom he probably formed a workshop community around 1506. Around 1510 a work for the Austrian monasteries Lambach , St. Florian and Klosterneuburg is suspected, where he probably first worked with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. could have come into contact. In 1512 he moved to Schwerin, where Duke Heinrich V ("the peacemaker") of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had appointed him as court painter and master builder. On a trip with the Duke, he is likely to have met Lucas Cranach in 1512 . An altar for the Holy Blood Chapel of the Sternberg town church in Sternberg , created in 1516 by order of the Dukes Heinrich and Albrecht VII, was destroyed by fire in 1741.

For the Lübeck Bible (1533/34) printed by Ludwig Dietz in 1533/34 in the Low German translation by Johannes Bugenhagen , he provided woodcuts . In 1537 the Duke presented him with a house for his work. Between 1546 and 1551 he was given several building contracts, but these were so general that they can no longer be grasped today. From 1552 it was taken over by Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg at his written request to Duke Heinrich. For Duke Johann Albrecht I he was presumably the chief architect of the royal court in Wismar between 1552 and 1555 . It is mentioned for the last time around 1561.

He influenced panel painters close to him and at least parts of altars in the collection of the St. Anne's Museum are directly attributed to him.

In contrast to his brother, Erhard Altdorfer is less independent and creative in his artistic work and often uses ready-made patterns from other artists such as his brother, Jacopo de 'Barbari and above all the Cranach workshop. He was mainly active as a draftsman and graphic artist and apparently has only created a few paintings. Only a few of his works are signed, so that a large part of the works assigned to him today are only attributions.
