Eddie Jones (bassist)

Edward "Eddie" Jones (born March 1, 1929 in New York City , † May 31, 1997 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American jazz bassist . He played in the Count Basie band.

Live and act

Eddie Jones grew up like Count Basie in Red Bank (New Jersey) and was Basie's neighbor there. He began studying bass at Howard University in 1946 , played with Sarah Vaughan and Lester Young in 1950 and worked as a music teacher in South Carolina in 1951/2 before joining the Count Basie Band, of which he was a member from 1954 to 1962, and on the recordings from albums such as April In Paris , Count Basie Swings - Joe Williams Sings , Count Basie in Newport and the legendary recordings for the roulette label ( The Atomic Mr. Basie ). In addition to his work with Basie, Eddie Jones recorded records with Ruby Braff , Osie Johnson , Bob Brookmeyer , Milt Jackson ( Opus De Jazz , 1955), Hank Jones 1957, Dave Lambert 1955, Thad Jones 1956/57, Paul Quinichette 1957, Frank Wess ( I Hear Ya Talkin ' , 1959), Coleman Hawkins and Lem Winchester (1960). In 1962 he gave up jazz music and started working for IBM . He later became the vice president of an insurance company. From the 1980s he also played jazz on the side, e. B. 1989 on the album by Frank Wess, also an ex-Basie man, Dear Mr. Basie (Concord).

Eddie Jones is not to be confused with the blues guitarist Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones .
