Katie Webster (born January 11, 1936 in Houston , † September 5, 1999 in League City , Texas ) was an American jazz pianist and singer.

She was partly of Indian, partly Afro-American descent and best known for her recording of the piano part in the Otis Redding hit I'm sitting on the dock of the bay . She was also referred to as The Swamp Boogie Queen after the title of her most famous album .

Her birth name was Kathryn Jewel Thorne . She learned gospel songs from her mother, toured internationally with soul musician Otis Redding in the 50s and 60s, and can be heard on records with swamp blues musicians like Lazy Lester . From 1964 to 1967 she played in the band of Otis Redding. Her international breakthrough as a soloist came in the 1980s with countless European tours and a record deal with Alligator Records. She could never be assigned to "clear" styles such as blues or boogie woogie , but played jazz, blues, boogie woogie, rhythm and blues , swamp blues, jazzed pop songs as well as gospel and spirituals . In addition, she played in Zydeco / Cajun bands, made music with the blues musician Robert Cray and entertained tourists on New Orleans ' Bourbon Street.

After suffering a stroke in 1993, Katie Webster largely retired from the music business and lived with her family near Houston, Texas. She died of heart failure on September 5, 1999.
