Candidate for the mayor's office in Hanover

Hansmann was nominated as a candidate of the SPD for the office of Lord Mayor in the election scheduled for October 27, 2019. At the first press conference at the beginning of May 2019, he stated that he wanted to focus on three priorities, the creation of sufficient places in day-care centers, housing construction and climate policy. He also mentioned fighting child poverty and investing in education.

In 1999 he tried unsuccessfully to be nominated for Herbert Schmalstieg's first election period as candidate for mayor of the SPD.

The CDU and FDP suspected that Hansmann was involved in the town hall affair during his tenure as head of finance. Based on an SMS from 2016 that Hansmann wrote to Alexander Götz, the responsible department head in the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior , the FDP asked the Lower Saxony state government for a statement. This has since been published and refutes the allegations.
