Eckhard Dietmar Scholz (* 1963 in Königslutter ) is a German mechanical engineer and former automobile manager. From 2012 to 2018 he was head of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand and the Volkswagen plant in Hanover in Hanover-Stöcken in the VW Group . On October 27, 2019, he ran as a non-party candidate of the CDU for the office of Lord Mayor in the state capital Hanover , in which he was defeated in a runoff on November 10, 2019.

Eckhard Scholz comes from a small family. His father was a carpenter and his mother contributed to the family income as a part-time worker. After high school and military service, Scholz studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig . He completed his studies in 1990 as a graduate engineer and began the following year as a test engineer for vehicle air conditioning and equipment at Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg. After various positions at home and abroad , Scholz received his doctorate in 2005 from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg as Dr.-Ing. and then returned to Wolfsburg in the field of technical development. From 2007 to 2012 he was Head of Development at Škoda in Mladá Boleslav , Czech Republic , before he was employed by Volkswagen AG in 2012 as head of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles division in Hanover-Stöcken. There he played a decisive role both in the conversion of the fleet drive from internal combustion to electric motors, as well as in the economic consolidation of the plant, which then managed without any operational dismissals. In 2018, Scholz left the group at his own request. Scholz was subsequently acted as president of Eintracht Braunschweig , but his family wanted to "land in Hanover".

Scholz is married and has five children and four grandchildren with his wife.

In the election for Mayor of Hanover on October 27, 2019, Scholz, as a non-party candidate of the CDU, received 60,046 votes (32.2%) and was 49 votes behind the second strongest candidate behind the representative of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Belit Onay (also 32.2%) , 2%) and before the SPD applicant Marc Hansmann (23.5%). Scholz thus reached the runoff election on November 10, 2019, in which his competitor Belit Onay was defeated with 47.1% of the vote.

Scholz campaigned politically for a transport concept in Hanover that aims to balance public transport, bicycles and car traffic. He also advocated improving safety and cleanliness in the city and investing in residential construction while taking social issues into account.

Volunteer work and awards

Scholz is a carnivalist and in 2018 was the honorary senator of the Hanoverian carnival association Lindener Narren . In 2017 the Schützengemeinschaft Hannover appointed him the Senator of Rifles and in 2019 awarded him the "Silver Claw" for his services to shooting.
