history

Freudenthalstrasse in Stöcken

Originating from a small village north of Hanover on a linen terrace, Stöcken was incorporated into Hanover in 1907. In 1757, Stöcken was occupied by French troops during the Seven Years' War . The place was dominated by agriculture until the 20th century. With the exception of the brickworks, which opened in 1890, there was no industry.

Continental AG Hanover Stöcken

It was only after the incorporation - due to the construction of the Mittelland Canal and the Nordhafen port facility - that industry could settle. Before the beginning of the Second World War, the industrial companies Varta and Continental settled there. In this context, the Hanover-Stöcken concentration camp was established as a satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp , in which forced laborers had to work for the German armaments industry under inhumane conditions. A memorial in Marienwerder reminds of this today .

Development into an industrial location

Many industrial companies have settled in the north of Stöckens in particular. After the Second World War , Continental settled there , and the Volkswagen plant in Hanover was added in 1955 . The first VW Bulli was also built in Hanover . Johnson Controls has also settled in Stöcken.

Lüttje Lage

The most famous resident of Stöckens was Cord Broyhan . He invented a light beer in 1526. The top-fermented Broyhan beer named after him gave the city of Hanover a considerable economic boom and an important position in the field of the art of brewing at the time. The Lüttje Lage arose from the custom of drinking Broyhan beer with brandy .

Reside and live

During this time, the district center with the Stöckener market and the leisure center was built. A large part of the storey consists of three to four-story residential developments with large green areas, which were created in the post-war period. One of the streets is Am Stöckener Bach . One of the largest cemeteries in Hanover is the Stöcken city cemetery . In the district there are the fire and rescue station 2 of the Hanover fire brigade. The Evangelical Lutheran Corvinus Church and the Catholic St. Christophorus Church were closed in 2012 and 2019, respectively, so that there is no longer a Christian church in Stöcken today. However, there are two mosques, including the well-known Sami Mosque .

The Black Heide settlement area belongs to the Stöcken district and is the only residential area in the district north of the A2 . There may also be apartments for up to 2000 people.
