The castle Rautenberg is a Outbound lowland castle in the district Rautenberg the community Harsum in Hildesheim in Lower Saxony . The von Rautenberg family sat in the castle . No building remains of the fortification in the construction of a medieval tower hill castle (Motte) have survived, only the castle hill and remains of the moat are still present.

description

The moth hill, which is lined with beeches and oaks , is also known as the "Hahnewall". It is located north of the village center and has dimensions of 65 × 30 meters; the height is about three meters. In the eastern area, the hill plateau is a little higher in an area 22 meters long and 15 meters wide. The reason for the different heights of the castle hill is not known, but it could be due to historical excavations. The hill was surrounded by a moat that was 25 to 30 meters wide. It was backfilled during the coupling in 1853. In the north and east the ditch can still be recognized by means of slight depressions in the surrounding meadow. At the foot of the castle hill there is a well , the socket of which has recently been bricked up. Medieval weapons, mead bottles and everyday objects were found at the bottom of the fountain in the 1970s .

history

As early as 1249, the von Rautenberg family is documented as vassals of the Counts of Stolberg . Heinrich von Rautenberg fortified the place in 1480 with a wall with a hedge and a moat, in the northeast corner of which the tower hill castle stood. The castle could have been destroyed in the Hildesheim beer feud from 1484 to 1486 or during the Hildesheim collegiate feud from 1519 to 1523. It is also possible that it was only finally given up after the family died out in 1647, as the family held their property in Rautenberg up to this point. The von Rautenberg family also lived in the village of Rethmar a few kilometers to the north ; There she had built a fortress house , first mentioned in a document in 1332, as early as 1200 , the core of today 's Rethmar Castle , whose west wing was built in the 16th century. She also owned the Rautenberg'schen Hof in Hildesheim at the corner of Michaelisplatz and Langer Hagen, built around 1509 , a high-tier half-timbered building that was destroyed in the air raids on Hildesheim in 1945.
