Hotteln is a village and district in the city of Sarstedt in Lower Saxony . The district is connected to the city center northeast of Sarstedt via the neighboring town of Gödringen and the L 410.

history

Hotteln is one of the oldest places in Lower Saxony. He was first mentioned in 835 as Hottenhem in the traditions of the Corvey monastery. A memorial stone on the Thieberg, the central place in the village, reminds of this.

The Thieberg was a large water reservoir, which is why Hotteln was always considered a water-rich village in the whole area. As early as 1850, a water pipe was built in the lower village, which was fed from the well on Thieberg. There was a pump community in the upper village. In 1930 a typhus epidemic broke out in the lower village, the cause of which was to be found in the contaminated water of the aqueduct. There were large numbers of illnesses and deaths. The well was then closed and a new well was built east of the village in Rethling. Thus the upper village could also be connected to the water supply. An economic upswing began in the village after the Franco-Prussian War and the emergence of the German nation. The farmers started growing sugar beets because the soil was well suited for this. Agriculture was once dominant in Hotteln. Today (2014) there are only a few farms left and a decline in agriculture is also becoming apparent here.

Hotteln was incorporated into the city of Sarstedt through the regional reform on March 1, 1974 together with Heisede , Giften , Gödringen , Ruthe and Schliekum .

religion

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Hotteln-Bledeln-Gödringen became the "Evangelical Lutheran Twelve Apostles Parish" on January 1, 2012 with the parishes in Algermissen, Groß Lobke, Lühnde-Ummeln-Wätzum, Ingeln-Oesselse and Wirringen-Müllingen-Wassel Sarstedt-Land in Algermissen "in the Hildesheim-Sarstedt parish.

coat of arms

The village's coat of arms is a golden grain shepherd, as it was used to measure grain in medieval times. This symbol appeared for the first time in the coat of arms of those of Hottenem. There is evidence that it was used as a seal in 1484 on a document drawn by Conrad Hottenem as a representative of the Hildesheim bishop. It is unclear why this symbol was used, but from today's point of view it can be seen as an indication of the nature of the surrounding landscape.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The church
  • The Protestant single-nave quarry stone church, once built on the highest point, is the oldest surviving building in the village. The St. Dionys Church has a Romanesque defense tower, on which a late Gothic bell is peal in 1532. The nave is from the Gothic period and the probably somewhat younger choir was completely renewed in 1794.
  • Thieberg was not only the focus of its location , it was also the communication center of the village. A large boulder discovered in the district, probably a red porphyry, is located on the Thieberg, to which the memorial for the fallen was attached in 1923. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig on October 18, 1913, a memorial service was held here, in which the entire population took part. On this day the three oaks were planted, which give the square a special note today.
On June 13, 2012 it was determined with the help of a truck crane that the boulder weighs 15.8 tons.
  • At the entrance to the village from the direction of Gödringen was the post mill , built with a French license , which had been owned by the Warmbold millers since 1865 and supplied the Hottelner with flour and grist. In 1974 it was demolished and rebuilt in Mollenfelde near Göttingen in the local bread museum , which in turn moved together with the mill to Ebergötzen in 2004 . At the original location of the mill, a memorial stone commemorates Hotteln's former landmark.
  • In the Kirchstrasse there are some old stud and half-timbered houses , some of which can be dated back to the time of the Thirty Years War . An example of this is the Stümpelhof , which housed a local history museum until the 1980s. It is now privately owned.
  • North-west of Hotteln, the Delmer oaks are reminiscent of the Delm desert . This is a village that became desolate as part of the Hildesheim collegiate feud . The heirs of this village still form the Realgemeinde Delm today , elect their mayor and call their community assembly. Citizenship in this village can only be acquired through inheritance or marriage.

Regular events

  • In the days of Shrovetide, an old Shrovetide tradition is maintained by the village bachelors. During the Heische parade on Saturday in the week before Shrove Monday they can be seen, two sausage porters in butcher's jackets with sausage fork being carried together and two Kiepen women collecting eggs. Accompanied by four Plump sacks, dressed in white, with white stocking cap and white mask, they run in front of the group here and around them and beat especially children and girls, but also the adult audience, with a filled Strumpfbeitel. Eggs, sausages and spirits are collected during the parade. This includes the performance of the cleaning dance , which tells a gruesome story, according to which the throat of a traveling screen flicker is cut by a barber while shaving. Brought back to life by the miracle doctor Hasenfuß, the barber is pursued by the village policeman and ultimately the High Court of Pleasure sentenced the barber to a just punishment.
  • The traditional carnival with carnival fun on Saturday and children's masquerade on Sunday.
  • The annual Clean Landscape Campaign in Hotteln for Environment Day is a garbage collection campaign that almost has the character of a village festival.
  • The traditional Easter bonfire takes place in the district In den Rotten .
  • The maypole is set up by the volunteer fire brigade and the local community.
  • Since December 1, 2004, the Hottelner Advent meetings have taken place outside the decorated Advent windows of the respective hosts on 23 evenings between 6.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. in anticipation of December 24th.
