Astasis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Astasis (astatic, Greek ástatos: inconsistent) is a method for eliminating the effects of electrical and magnetic interference fields in precision measuring devices and increasing the sensitivity of rotary spring gravimeters .

Procedural principle

Spring gravimeters make use of the non-linear relationship between attacking gravity and opposing spring force . By adapting the geometry, the static equilibrium is shifted towards the astatic state, so that the position of the test mass changes more strongly in the event of a differential change in gravity. (See also: relative gravimeter )

To cancel the influence of the directional force of the earth's magnetism on a magnetic needle, a magnet is placed in the vicinity of the needle in a suitable manner so that its directional force is equal to and opposite to that of the earth.
