Groß Escherde is a village and eastern part of the municipality of Nordstemmen in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Groß Escherde is located on Bundesstraße 1 between the city of Hildesheim and the community center. Neighborhoods are Klein Escherde in the north, Emmerke in the east and Heyersum in the west . The Hildesheim Forest rises to the south .

history

The place name is derived from Hesschehirithi via Hesserthe , Escherte to Escherde . In 1203 Lippold von Escherte donated the church and four farms of his Escherte estate for the foundation of a Benedictine monastery . In 1236 the monastery was relocated to Haus Escherde , which still exists today and is located in a quieter location near the Hildesheim forest . With the first mention of Klein Escherde ("in parvo Escherde") in 1258, the presence of the second place with this name in the Hochstift Hildesheim is documented. A Romanesque arched doorway inside today's Groß Escherder Church is a reminder of the medieval building that was demolished in 1891 due to its dilapidation.

Incorporations

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Groß Escherde
Blazon : "On a red coat of arms there are two upright golden keys with beards facing outwards."
Foundation of the coat of arms: The monastery founded in 1203 by Lippold von Escherde at his ancestral seat Groß Escherde was relocated to the village of Bovingehusen, today's House of Escherde, in 1236, where it existed until 1810. The coat of arms of its founder attached to the gates of the monastery is the basis for the coat of arms of the community of Groß-Escherde. The keys stand for the symbol of independence and responsibility for their management. The coat of arms was used in the official seal of Groß Escherde until it was incorporated into Nordstemmen.
