history

In 1151 the village of Himstedt was first mentioned as Hemstide . During this time, the Moritzstift in Hildesheim had property in the village. In 1166 the name Rotmann von Himstedt is mentioned. His wife Sophie was the daughter of Count Heinrich von Assel-Winzenburg. In her second marriage, she was later probably married to Burkhard I. von Woldenberg . Together with his brother Siegfried, Rotmann owned goods near Wolfenbüttel that were later sold to the Steterburg monastery . In addition, another family von Himstedt is mentioned in the late 12th century who owned land in the village, which later also fell to the Steterburg monastery.

In 1390, the Stiftsmarschall Hans von Schwicheldt and in 1481 Ludolf von Saldern owned episcopal fiefs in Himstedt.

On March 1, 1974, Groß Himstedt together with the communities Bettrum, Feldbergen, Hoheneggelsen, Klein Himstedt, Mölme, Nettlingen, Söhlde and Steinbrück formed the new community Söhlde. From 1821 to 1866, these villages were already part of the Steinbrück office, while from 1885 to 1974 they belonged to the Marienburg district , which eventually became part of the Hildesheim district.

The Romanesque church from before 1300, the village community center and the village square as well as a war memorial fit into the current appearance of the village. The mill memorial stone is also worth mentioning.
