The forewood in the Lower Saxony districts of Hildesheim and Wolfenbüttel is up to 243  m above sea level. NHN high ridge of the Innerstebergland in the Weser-Leine-Bergland (Lower Saxony Bergland) .

The forewood is in the north of the Innerstebergland. It is located north of the valley of the Innerste between the ridges of Lichtenberge (northwest part of the Salzgitter ridge ) in the east-south-east, Hainberg in the south-south-east, Sauberge in the south-south-west and Hildesheimer Wald in the west -south- west. It extends east-southeast of Hildesheim and west of Salzgitter between Schellerten in the north, Burgdorf in the east-northeast and Holle in the south.

Parts of the landscape protection area Vorholzer Bergland ( CDDA no. 325461; designated 1996; 37.565 km² ) are located on large parts of the forewood  .

Natural allocation

The forewood belongs to the natural space main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (Lower Saxony Bergland) (No. 37), in the main unit Innerstebergland (379) and in the subunit Hildesheimer Bergland (379.0) to the natural area Vorholzer Bergland (379.06). In the south, the latter joins the Innerstetal natural area (379.04) and in the south and south-west the Itzumer plateau natural area (379.05). To the east, north and northwest the landscape leads into the main unit Braunschweig-Hildesheimer Lößbörde (520), which belongs to the main unit group Niedersächsche Börden (52), with the natural areas (viewed in west-east direction) Hildesheimer Lößbörde (520.3), Ilseder Lößbörde (520.4) , Nettlinger back (520.5) and Lebenstedter Lößbörde (520.6) over.

geology

The limestones of the Malm , from which the forewood is mainly built, form the Hildesheim Jura ridge . Known nationwide have been fossil rich Heersumer layers , the former in a quarry near the town Heersum digested shown.

The wooded forewood, which is up to 243  m high with the Knebelberg and in which some streams arise as tributaries from Innerste (directly touching the south) and Fuhse (running a little further to the northeast), is criss-crossed by several hiking and forest trails . There is a telecommunications tower on the Barenberg near Grasdorf and a now dilapidated observation tower on the Ortsberg near Astenbeck .

The federal motorway 7 runs through the forewood approximately in a north-west-south-east direction between the junctions Hildesheim and Derneburg / Salzgitter and the federal road 6 from Hildesheim through Achtum , Uppen and Wendhausen to Heersum . The section Nettlingen - Vorholz - Grasdorf of the federal road 444 runs through the ridge in north-south direction .
