Burchard I. von Woldenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burchard I. von Woldenberg (* before 1191; † February 8, 1235 in Constantinople ) was Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1232 to 1235 .

Life

He came from the house of the Counts of Wöltingerode, the later Lords of Woldenberg . He had been a canon in Hildesheim since 1191 , became provost of St. Blasii in Braunschweig in 1197 and provost of St. Peter in Goslar in 1204.

After the death of the Archbishop of Magdeburg Albrecht I von Käfernburg (1170-1232) at the end of December 1232, Burchard was elected Albrecht's successor. Until the election was confirmed by the Pope, Burchard registered as “chosen”, for the first time on January 1, 1233. Pope Gregory IX. († 1241) had initially designated Provost Engelbrecht von Altona as archbishop, but in 1233 confirmed the election of the Magdeburg citizens. In a letter dated September 22, 1233, the Pope allowed the provost (Burchard) of St. Blasii zu Braunschweig, elected Archbishop of Magdeburg, to administer the temporal and spiritual matters until this was confirmed. In a letter from Rieti dated July 20, 1234, Gregor IX. the bishops of Merseburg, Ekkehard, and Meißen, Heinrich, who was elected archbishop of Magdeburg and confirmed by him, provost Burchard of Braunschweig to grant the consecration in his place. According to Magdeburg's bishop's chronicle, however, the episcopal ordination was not carried out. In a certificate from Calbe an der Saale dated November 19, 1234 (LASA, MD, U 3, G No. 6), Burchard is still listed as the Electus confirmatus ( chosen and confirming person ).

Burchard's two-year tenure left little mark. No coins were minted during his tenure. In the state archive of Saxony-Anhalt there are only three documents that were issued by Burchard von Woldenberg. Assuming that Burchard's date of death is February 8, 1235, he must have left Germany by the beginning of December 1234 at the latest, because the distance from Calbe an der Saale to Constantinople (now Istanbul) is approx. 2200 km.

Buchard died on February 8, 1235 in Constantinople during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His grave is unknown.
