history

Memorial stone on the “Am Thie” square.

As Egenhem , Einum was named for the first time in a document in 996. Already in the Middle Ages there were various connections to Hildesheim, as the Godehardikloster and the Hildesheim Cathedral owned lands here. In the village which was hermitage of a hermit. The landmark of Einum still reminds of them today - the “Klus” called Marienkapelle, built in 1688, which is also depicted in the town's coat of arms.

In 1864 the psychiatrist Ludwig Snell founded Germany's first “agricultural insane colony” on the lands of the tax forest state domain .

When it was incorporated into Hildesheim, which came into force on March 1, 1974, Einum had 852 inhabitants and was strongly influenced by agriculture and the church. Even today, most of the inhabitants of the former monastery village, which is essentially a round village , are Catholic. In 2001, 517 of the 1019 inhabitants were Catholic and 307 Protestant, the rest belonged to other denominations or were non-denominational.

During construction work in the Glockensteinfeld industrial park on Bundesstrasse 1 east of the autobahn in November 2008, traces of a settlement from the Bronze Age around 3,000 years old were discovered in which around 50 people could have lived. These included the remains of a building measuring 5 × 17 m, a fountain around one meter in diameter and ceramics.

Culture and sights

Chapel "Klus".
Marienkirche (1874).

The main attraction is the Marienkapelle , a round building with a slate roof and an open vestibule, which is mostly called "Klus". A building with this name in Einum was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1609, but it is not clear whether it was the home of a hermit or the chapel of a hermitage . The chapel was renovated in 1875 and a damaged oil painting was found on the wall depicting St. Mary. In 1933, as part of a renewed renovation, the chapel was redesigned when its entrance was moved from the southern to the eastern side. In addition, plaques in memory of those who fell in World War I were attached to it. On Corpus Christi 1934 the chapel was inaugurated, which is still a station in the Corpus Christi processions today. In 1954 it was included in the coat of arms of the municipality of Einum, and in 1957 the Einum municipal council decided to put up plaques in memory of the victims of the Second World War. After Einums was incorporated in Hildesheim in 1974, the city of Hildesheim carried out another renovation in 1978. The "Klus", which stands in a well-tended green area on the north-western edge of the village, now serves as a memorial for the victims of both world wars.

Another attraction is the Catholic Marienkirche (Immaculate Conception of Mary) in Kirchweg 5, which was completed in 1874 in the neo-Romanesque style. Part of its sandstone tower dates back to 1325, while the nave was built from limestone. Inside, there is a sandstone baptismal font made around 1300 and several windows from 1908 depicting the life of Our Lady. It is also shown on the choir window (1874). Since 2014 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Martin with its seat in Achtum.

There is a green area in Löwentorstraße, which is the rest of the garden of a manor house that no longer exists today. The large statues of two lions , made of sandstone in the second half of the 19th century, from which the street owes its name, have been preserved. The green area is still called "Löwentorpark" today.

On Bundesstraße 1, in the middle of the village, on the corner of Löwentorstraße, you will notice the 1.65 meter high bell stone , an old atonement stone . It is the remainder of an old disc cross, over two meters high, which was first mentioned in 1653. Various sagas and legends entwine around the bell stone. One says that the stone was set up at the scene of the crime in the 14th century by a bell caster who murdered a journeyman. The bell stone originally stood in the Feldmark, but it may have been given the shape of a bell due to the weather. In 1998 the stone was restored and placed at its current location.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

Even today, Einum is largely influenced by agriculture with high land values (65–100): There are nine full-time farms and two farm shops. The basic supply is guaranteed with a discounter, a kiosk, a bakery branch in the former market hall, a gas station as well as a car workshop / towing company and several handicraft businesses, the place also has a kindergarten, sports field and a village community center. The volunteer fire brigade Einum is present and maintains its own fire station .

The “Glockensteinfeld” industrial park east of the Hildesheim motorway junction is developing continuously. In addition to a deep-freeze warehouse operated by Transgourmet Hildesheim, various businesses have settled. A truck stop with a petrol station, an e-charging station, a fast food restaurant, a building materials store, a coin store and a garage service provider determine the preliminary additional commercial infrastructure.

traffic

In terms of traffic, Einum is connected to Hildesheim , west of Einum, via Bundesstraße 1 . In an easterly direction you reach Braunschweig after around 50 km . The "Hildesheim" motorway junction of the A 7 is only 1 km away from Einum. A city bus line establishes the connection with the neighboring, southern district of Achtum-Uppen , where the closest school is located, as well as with the Hildesheim city center.
