Immaculate Conception of Mary , also called Maria Immaculata , is the Roman Catholic Church in the Hildesheim district of Einum . Today it belongs to the parish of St. Martin with its seat in Achtum in the deanery of Borsum-Sarstedt.

history

One of the first reliable reports about Einum comes from the founding document of the Hildesheim Godehardikloster in 1146. a. the Andreasstift and the cathedral chapter , which in the 12th to 13th centuries even owned an oboe - estate in the settlement , property in unity.

Ecclesiastically, Einum belonged to the main and baptismal church of St. Andreas in the Archdiakonat Hildesheim. There is no documentary evidence that the chapel was built in the village. The burial of the religious Ludovicus Lesse , who was pastor in Achtum around 1350, in the medieval chapel is a possible indication of the existence of the church in the 14th century. From an art historical point of view, there are further indications that point to an existence. Parts of the current church tower are said to date from 1325. A local clergyman in one can not be confirmed during the Middle Ages . Rather, the community was a branch of the parish in Akhtum. The parish of Achtum had been able to break away from the parish association of St. Andreas in Hildesheim since 1195, but remained organized under the Hildesheim ban . While the Einumer had to visit the main church of St. Andrew to receive the sacraments , the Sunday service was celebrated in the Akhtum parish church of St. Martin. The pastoral care in Einum also came from the Akhtum parish, in which Benedictine and Augustinian canons from the Godehardikloster and the Sülestift in Hildesheim were particularly active.

"Klus" chapel

The confirmed establishment of the Madonna's Chapel at the exit of the village around 1310 is characteristic of the veneration of Mary in Einum. A Mary - patron saint of the local chapel in the Middle Ages can not be excluded.

With the establishment of the organization of offices in the Diocese of Hildesheim , the cathedral chapter established the office of Einum, which was pledged to the von Harlessem family in 1427 . At the end of the 15th century, the office of Einum was incorporated into the tax forest office. After the reformation of the former main church of St. Andrew in 1542, the "teachings of Martin Luther " also came to Einum. In addition , from 1557, Adolf von Holstein , the brother of the late Bishop Friedrich von Holstein , attempted to introduce the evangelical faith in the parishes of the tax forest office, which was pledged to him. The preservation of the Catholic creed is due not least to the archdeacon and cathedral provost, to whose spell St. Martin in Achtum and thus also St. Maria in Einum belonged. According to the statement of the pastor Jodokus Meyeringk in Akhtum in the visitation protocol of 1609, his parish was not affected by the Reformation.

During the Thirty Years' War , a large part of the village and the chapel, which could only be renovated around 1660, were damaged.

On December 20, 1859, the Einum branch was detached from the mother parish of Achtum and made an independent parish. In 1874 the medieval church in Einum was demolished because of its dilapidation. The new parish church was built in its place while retaining the Romanesque tower. It was consecrated to Maria Immaculata on November 8, 1874 . From 1864 to 1869, during the Kulturkampf , the parish could only be looked after by a parish administrator.

After the Second World War, 374 displaced persons came to the monastery village of Einum with the flow of refugees . According to the visit report from 1954, only 70 refugees belonged to the Catholic Church, while the remainder were Protestant.

On November 1st, 2014 the new parish of St. Martin was established with its seat in Achtum. In this context, the Einum parish of the Immaculate Conception of Mary was abolished and transferred to the new parish. The Immaculate Conception of Mary has since been a subsidiary church of St. Martin.

architecture

The church was completed in 1874 in the neo-Romanesque style. Part of its sandstone tower dates from 1325, while the nave was built from limestone. Inside there is a baptismal font made from sandstone around the year 1300 and several windows from 1908 depicting the life of Our Lady. It is also shown on the choir window from 1874.
