St. Martin Church

St. Martin is the Roman Catholic parish church in the Hildesheim district of Achtum in the deanery of Borsum-Sarstedt.

history

In 1173, Bishop Adelog transferred the tithe of the Achtum settlement to the Hildesheim Godehardikloster . The tithing obligation of the Achtum farmers existed until the secularization of the Godehardikloster in 1803. The written mention of Achtum was followed later in the 12th to 14th centuries by numerous documents, which the purchase or sale of real estate etc. a. to the Godehardikloster, the Kreuzstift, the cathedral chapter or to the main and baptismal church of St. Andreas in Hildesheim.

Until 1195 the community of Achtum belonged to the parish of St. Andreas. At the end of the 12th century, the Achtum farmers managed to free themselves from this parish compulsory payment of 26 Schillings annually . With the solution from the parish association, the completion of the church in Achtum can also be verified. The independence of the Achtumer St. Martinskirche referred only to the parish of St. Andreas, the archdeaconate rights of the main and baptismal church remained unaffected. The archdeacon was also the patron saint of the parish church in Akhtum. With Albertus sacerdos de agtem a pastor was confirmed there in 1235. Later it was religious from the Godehardikloster who took over the pastoral care of the community. The organization of the parish association was already during the Middle Ages progressed so far that the Mariengemeinde in Einum was supervised by the pastor of St. Martin.

The Achtum settlement was badly damaged in 1519 during the outbreak of the Hildesheim collegiate feud .

With regard to the organization of offices, Achtum enjoyed a special legal status and was, so to speak, free from office. The cathedral chapter was entitled to the patrimonial jurisdiction , which in turn appointed a regent for Achtum. This provided a bailiff who administered the manorial court. Only in 1815 came Achtum to the tax forest office . The resulting close ties between the congregation and the Hildesheim cathedral chapter were probably a prerequisite for successfully resisting the introduction of the Reformation, although the Archdeaconate Church of St. Andrew had been reformed in 1542.

In 1579, after a three-year vacancy, St. Martin got a new pastor named Albert Bode , who himself converted from Catholicism to Lutheran doctrine, but then returned to the Catholic Church.

During the Thirty Years War , Achtum was again affected. The church and rectory were badly damaged and could not be repaired until 1650.

From a denominational point of view, at the end of the 19th century, the community of Achtum and its affiliated town of Uppen can be assumed to be almost exclusively Catholic. The parish church of St. Martin was so dilapidated that the nave had to be demolished in 1866 . From 1900 to 1903, while parts of the tower were retained, today's parish church of St. Martin was built.

On November 1, 2014, the new parish of St. Martin was established with its seat in Achtum, to which the subsidiary churches Immaculate Conception of Mary in Bavenstedt and Immaculate Conception of Mary in Einum belong.

architecture

The east-facing church is located around 111 meters above sea level . The nave was demolished in 1899 and then rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style according to the plans of diocesan architect Richard Herzig , while retaining parts of the quarry stone tower from the 12th century .
