The Ostseebad Laboe [ laˈbøː ] is a community in the provost in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein on the east bank of the Kiel Fjord . The community is a residential and vacation spot and adorns itself with the slogan "The sunny side of the Kiel Fjord".

geography

Laboe is about ten kilometers northeast of the state capital Kiel . In the central local system of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the municipality is located at the extreme end of the eastern settlement axis of the Kiel Fjord , one of the busiest waterways in the world. Somewhat away in the north, around the Danish islands of Langeland and Ærø, the so-called “ Danish South Sea ” begins . Laboe is located on the west bank of the Probstei landscape, rich in fields, forests and lakes, and thus historically belongs to Holstein .

Districts

Laboe has several districts, each with their own character. The most important are the upper and lower villages. The administration, numerous shops and the main focus of the spa and tourism operations as well as the ports are located in the lower village. With its upper village, Laboe has preserved its old village center, which is largely intact in its basic structure as a circular village. Around a center originally designed as an anger, courtyards are grouped towards the middle. In between there is a whole row of small cottages and outbuildings. The route, which was originally emphasized like a row of trees and laid in a ring around the center, has also been largely preserved. In the recent past a significant structural development of the community with the "Wulff'schen Koppel" took place in Oberdorf. In the future, several building areas with a size of around 600 residential units, adjacent to existing settlements, are to be developed in the southeast of the municipality.

Neighboring communities

The neighboring municipalities include Brodersdorf , Stein , Lutterbek , Wendtorf and Heikendorf . The Bundeswehr ammunition depot Laboe is located south of the municipal boundary. The vicinity of Laboe includes around 10,000 residents.

history

In 1226 the area between the Köhner Mühlbach in the east and the Hagener Au in the west as well as the adjacent forest came into the possession of the Preetz monastery, hence the name Probstei. Laboe was laid out between 1226 and its first documented mention in 1240 as a Rundangerdorf ("Rundling"): the individual farms were grouped around a circular square, the village green (today's Oberdorf).

However, there was probably already a Slavic fishing village called "Lubodne", in German Schwanenort . The name comes from the Baltic Slavonic , as Laboe is located in Wagrien , that part of Holstein that was previously settled by Slavs. See Polish łabędź , ("swan"); Russian лебедь / lebed '(the same). The swan is also the heraldic animal Laboes. Abrasive linguistic usage made "Lübod'n" according to this concept: Lübode, Lüboe, Laboe.

In 1643 there was a battle between the Danes and Swedes fighting for supremacy on the Baltic Sea at the “Rütersoll” - at today's cemetery. Laboe was almost completely burned down during the battle. At the marl ditch, fifty skeletons, weapon parts and coins were found lying in a mass grave.

From 1796 to 1808 the teacher and discoverer of the cowpox vaccination Peter Plett worked at the school in Laboe.

The Ostseebad Laboe volunteer fire brigade has existed since 1880. The fire station was located in Oberdorf until 2000, when the 45 fire brigade (target strength 55 forces) moved into a new fire station at Schwanenweg 7. In the field of ship fire fighting, the Laboe fire brigade works together with the DGzRS ( Sea Rescue Cruiser Berlin ).

One of Laboe's landmarks, the mill, has been turning its wings since 1872. The master miller Merz had it built by the wing maker Mai. In 1904 the mill burned down, was rebuilt in 1906, burned down again in 1914 (for strategic reasons) and rebuilt in 1923 by Müller W. Thiessen. Years ago, the community representatives and the district committee of the Plön district granted a substantial subsidy for the maintenance of the mill in order to save it from the threatened demolition.

Since 1875 Laboe has had the addition of "Ostseebad", around 1900 the old rural structures of the previous century were still there, but the change in rural life in the area around the city of Kiel had already progressed significantly.

As part of the administrative structural reform of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the previously free municipality of Ostseebad Laboe joined the Probstei office together with the municipalities of Schönberg (Holstein) and Stoltenberg with effect from January 1, 2008 , part of the administrative department is located in the village.

mayor

On June 13, 2018, Marc Wenzel (Greens) was elected honorary mayor by the municipal council. After the decision to return to the full-time position of the mayor was resolved on August 29, 2018 through an amendment to the main statute, Heiko Voss, who was proposed by the Greens, was able to prevail against the candidates from the SPD and CDU with 67.88% in the election on March 17, 2019. He took office on June 1, 2019.

coat of arms

The coat of arms and flag were approved on October 8, 1959.

Blazon : "In blue over silver waves in the base of the shield a soaring, red armored silver swan, accompanied on the left by a fallen golden anchor."

The central figure of the local coat of arms, the flying swan, refers to the name of the municipality. "Laboe" is of Slavic origin and means "swan" in the extinct Polabian language . The location of the place on the Kiel Outer Fjord, whose livelihoods used to be fishing, now increasingly tourism, makes it likely to be named after the bird that is native to the water and is also strongly represented in this region. The anchor proves the community's attachment to shipping. He also points to the building with which Laboe is primarily associated: the 1927–1936 memorial for the members of the Imperial Navy who died in the First World War .

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag of Laboe shows the coat of arms of the community in the middle of a white cloth, each bordered by a narrow blue stripe at the top and bottom, but slightly shifted towards the pole.

Community partnerships

Economy and Infrastructure

Laboe is a central location and ensures the supply of goods and services for basic needs for the population in its integrated area. Tourism is by far the most important industry for the place.

Ports

In Laboe there are two marinas with over 700 berths, a fishing port and a commercial port with a museum jetty. In addition to deep-sea fishing trips, there is the possibility to charter sailing ships or to acquire various sailing licenses in sailing schools. A surf and kite school completes the offer. Excursion boats also start their trips to sea from the commercial harbor in summer.

As early as 1817, fishermen were using a jetty that ran in a north-westerly direction into the fjord. Over the years this jetty has been expanded by the fishermen to meet the growing demands. However, due to silting up due to storms and storm surges, larger boats and barges could soon no longer moor at this pier either.

In 1850, therefore, boatmen, fishermen and boatmen united to build a boat harbor near Laboe. The area for this was leased to the founded port association by the Preetz monastery. The port became an important transshipment point in the Kiel Fjord: in 1869 the port board counted 3465 incoming and outgoing ships; almost all of the transshipment in the region around Laboe went through the port. For a long time the provost was the breadbasket of the whole region. Grain was transported by ship from the Laboe harbor to the Scandinavian countries.

Sea rescue cruiser Berlin 2017

An important station of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) has been located in the port since 1985, on which the rescue cruiser Berlin has been stationed since 1985 and the rescue boat Bottsand since 1994 . The lifeboat Bottsand was decommissioned in 2015. In 2017, the rescue cruiser Berlin was replaced by a larger new building with the same name Berlin . Three rescue sheds testify to a long tradition of the DGzRS in Laboe. The first rescue shed from 1894 is at the rear of the harbor pavilion. Like the first, the second rescue shed on Hafenstrasse is a listed building. However, these historic rescue sheds are no longer in the possession of the DGzRS. The DGzRS Information Center North has also been located in Laboe since 2012.

Laboe also had a certain importance for the navy, as the port enabled the handling of material for coastal fortifications. In the last days of the Second World War, many ships from the east sought refuge in the ports of the western Baltic Sea. After the end of the war, some of the crews stayed and strengthened Laboe's small fishing fleet.

For the 1936 Sailing Olympics , the harbor on the south pier was expanded to accommodate the many vehicles of the regatta sailors.

The Laboeer Hafen has been awarded the blue environmental flag for clean seas every year since 1988. This award, which is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and in the Federal Republic of Germany by the German Society for Environmental Education, is given to port authorities who have made a special contribution to environmental protection and education.

Laboe is served by several bus routes and the ships of the towing and ferry company Kiel call at several times a day , which provide the direct connection from Kiel to Laboe. From Kiel, Laboe can be directly accessed nationwide via the newly created B 502 .

Laboe is also connected to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route , which runs around the entire Baltic Sea within the EuroVelo network, which means that not only Kiel, but also cities such as Stralsund, Gdansk, Riga, Saint Petersburg and Copenhagen can be reached by bike from Laboe .

Attractions

Naval Memorial Tower, June 2004

The list of cultural monuments in Laboe includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

The naval memorial commemorates the fallen sailors of both world wars . On August 8, 1927, the foundation stone of the 72-meter-high tower was laid by Admiral Reinhard Scheer . The construction of the memorial goes back to a resolution of the delegates' day of the German Navy Federation on July 6, 1925. The basic idea for the construction of the naval memorial came from Wilhelm Lammertz ( Imperial Navy ). The design by the architect Gustav August Munzer from Düsseldorf was intended for execution.

On a total area of 5.7 hectares, in addition to the tower, the facility includes an underground memorial hall, the "historical hall" with numerous ship models and other marine and shipping history exhibits as well as a 7000 m² open space covered with sandstone from the Weser . Around 700,000 Reichsmarks - mainly from donations from members of the naval associations and the naval officers' association - went into the expressionist building.

The German Navy commemorates the fallen marines of all nations involved in the world wars in an annual ceremony. Likewise, the crews of all German warships passing within sight stand as a sign of remembrance on deck and pay their tribute to the memorial.

A propeller of the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen can also be viewed in Laboe .

The U 995 submarine exhibited at the memorial belongs to the Type VII C and was built in 1943 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg. In 1952 the Norwegian Navy put the boat, which had previously been delivered to Great Britain, into service under the name Kaura . In 1965 the boat was returned to the Federal Republic of Germany, restored to its wartime condition and opened as a technical museum on March 13, 1972 in front of the Naval Memorial. The owner is the German Navy Federation . U 995 is the last surviving type VII C boat.
